The industry is awash with reports of a dispute between Brahmastra director Ayan Mukerji and Dharma Productions. Last week, Ayan Mukerji took to social media to announce the release of Brahmastra Part 2 and Brahmastra Part 3. Interestingly, Karan Johar and his production house were not in the picture. In fact, Ayan didn’t label or mention them. Not surprisingly, Mukerji’s failure to allude to Karan and his production house has caused rumors to stir. One such news that has been making the rounds is the report that Ayan is contemplating working on the second and third parts of Brahmastra under a different banner.
BREAKING: Has Ayan Mukerji moved on from Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions with the Brahmastra franchise?
Commenting on the same, a well-placed industry source told Bollywood Hungama: “Ayan’s failure to mention Karan Johar has not gone down very well. More than outraged by the omission, the filmmaker is heartbroken that Mukerji decided to take such a drastic step by announcing the sequel without discussing it or keeping him informed.” Ask the source to clarify what exactly happened and continue: “Karan has been more than kind enough to let Ayan get on with the Brahmastra concept. He let the director take his time, which resulted in the film being in production for eight years. Apart from this, Karan also made sure that although Brahmastra Part 1 went over budget, the release of the film was not affected. Instead, Karan put a lot more effort into marketing and promoting the company. Now, the situation is such that Ayan has announced the sequel leaving Karan out when it was thanks to the latter that the film was made in the first place.” Being left out of the equation for Brahmastra 2 and 3 has certainly hurt Karan, though the filmmaker prefers to maintain a dignified silence. Reports indicate that Ayan, who owns the intellectual property rights, has apparently started talks with other production bannermen, one of whom has expressed an interest in spearheading both companies.
If that wasn’t enough, another rumor making the rounds is that Ayan Mukerji has retained the intellectual property rights to the Brahmastra franchise, instead of Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. This rumor has found more fodder considering the fact that Ayan has begun reaching out to other banners for upcoming installments, legitimizing his claim to the franchise’s intellectual property. The source reveals, “Karan invested a lot of time and money to get it right with Brahmastra Part 1. Karan Johar explained in interviews that the investment made in Brahmastra is an investment made in the franchise and not just in a movie, so the First movie business cannot be looked at in isolation. But with this new development, it remains to be seen how Ayan plans to repay the investment made by Dharma if he takes the sequel to another producer. Now, with Ayan choosing to walk away, it seems the filmmaker took advantage of Karan’s magnanimous nature to execute what he wanted. This has become another sore point for Karan, who has treated the Brahmastra franchise and even Ayan as his own all this time.”
Without stopping there, the source highlights another fact that can stress relationships: “Brahmastra introduced Alia Bhatt. Obviously, he will also appear in the second and third installments of the franchise. In such a case, the professional relationship between Karan and Alia may also be the worst part of Ayan’s decision.”
