The creators of the upcoming movie ZEE5 Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai and his leading man, Manoj Bajpayee, received a legal notice from the rape convict’s charity Asaram for allegedly modeling the character of the villain in the convict’s film. They also sent the notice to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) while urging them to stop the release of the film and remove its trailer from the internet.

Mentioning that the content of the teaser and trailer is “derogatory” and “highly objectionable” towards Asaram, the notice added: “That, it is also worth noting that in the teaser and trailer for the aforementioned film, very obscene and hateful has been used by the filmmaker which is not only derogatory but indicts the very character of my client by portraying him as ‘Ravan and a serious rapist’ which is an insult to his religious and spiritual character and , therefore also to his beliefs and feelings the lacs of his followers and devotees.The film seeks to portray him as a negative character, which would definitely cause irreparable damage to his character, reputation and position in the society and public in throughout the country and abroad.
Lawyer Satya Prakash Sharma also claimed in the notice that the character, voice and name of the actor playing the villain Godman also resembles Asaram’s.
The notice also mentions that Sirf Ek Banda Kaafi Hai it will cause immense “mental agony”, “humiliation” and “shame” for Asaram and his devotees. The notice further states that the film “will result in a loss of trust and respect among his fans and admirers, which will have a significant impact on his financial and social standing. In addition, according to the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on the issue of film certification, any content that may hurt the feelings of a community or religious group should not be allowed to be shown in public.”
The notice adds that Asaram is currently facing prison on conviction for alleged offenses under the POCSO law and that the film may influence the final verdict. “The release of the film is likely to have serious repercussions on my client’s pending appeal (and) final hearing at the Hon’able Rajasthan High Court, Jodhpur.
The lawyer adds in the letter that Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai will launch directly on OTT. “However, the Government of India has also framed the Information Technology (Guidelines for Intermediaries and Digital Media Code of Ethics) Rules 2021 to regularize OTT platforms. Therefore, in case the filmmakers of the mentioned film proceed to release or broadcast it on TV on the OTT platform, the necessary restraining/prohibition orders can be issued against the filmmakers for the release/broadcast/promotion of the film on issue on the OTT platform,” the notice said.
