Citadel, the passion project from Amazon, produced by directorial duo Joe and Anthony Russo, has undergone major creative changes with costs spiraling and due to costly reshoots. The show is now on track to become the second most expensive show ever put on.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, there were “differences in vision that led to the departure of half the creative team and forced the show, a spy thriller that is destined to launch local spin-offs, into a round of expensive reshoots. series is on track to become the second most expensive TV show ever made, after its initial budget of $160 million, it now has to add $75 due to reshoots.”
As shared by the Comic Book publication, Citadelit was first announced that it would be in the works in 2020, with Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas set to star.
Amazon Studios had reportedly already ordered several local spinoffs for the series, which would follow the spies having their own adventures in Italy, India, and Mexico. According to the report, creative differences began to emerge after filming at the Citadel wrapped in December, and Amazon reportedly had “some reservations about the first images.”
As the weeks passed, other project commitments narrowed the creative fields down to two opposing forces, Joe Russo and Josh Appelbaum, who was the showrunner for the series leading to Appelbaum’s departure. The Russos’ production company, AGBO, is now reportedly in charge of Citadel, hiring Hunters’ David Weil to rewrite the show and director of photography Thomas Sigel to direct reshoots. The show is reportedly now in post-production.
