In the suicide case of actor Jiah Khan, a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Mumbai reserved judgment. Nearly ten years earlier, on June 3, 2013, Jiah’s mother, Rabia Khan, discovered her daughter hanging from the roof of her home in the Juhu neighborhood of Mumbai.
Jiah Khan Suicide Case: Verdict Expected on April 28
Juhu police arrested actor Suraj Pancholi, Jiah Khan’s then-boyfriend, for helping to commit suicide after a 6-page letter allegedly written by Jiah was discovered at his home. The suicide letter was claimed to be evidence against Suraj and represented his turbulent relationship.
However, Jiah’s mother, Rabia Khan, alleged that her daughter had been murdered and filed a petition with the Mumbai High Court, alleging that the local police had failed to properly investigate Jiah’s unfortunate death.
The Juhu police case had been handed over to the CBI by the HC on July 3, 2014. The agency also came to the same conclusion: suicide. According to the CBI, Jiah described her ordeal, her close friendship, her physical abuse, and her alleged mental and physical torture at the hands of Pancholi in her note, which led her to commit suicide.
The prosecution questioned 22 witnesses, including Jiah’s mother, who confirmed that it was a murder case and stated that Pancholi used to physically and verbally abuse her daughter. Rabia testified in court that neither the police nor the CBI had gathered “legal evidence” to support the suicide of her daughter.
PTI quoted Prashant Patil, who was appearing for Suraj, as saying: “We concluded closing arguments today (Thursday) on the facts and merits in the matter of Sooraj Pancholi v. CBI.”
He added: “We draw on certain historical rulings by the honorable Supreme Court and the high court to point out how the current case does not fall under the category of incitement to suicide. Now the matter is ready to issue a final judgment (on April 28)”.
